History
Steven Halpern shaped a style of slow, open-ended electric piano music built around sustained chords and long silences, with no rhythmic drive and no melody that demands attention. He began as a trumpeter and guitarist in New York before moving to California in the late 1960s, where he started developing what he called an anti-frantic alternative to the music around him. His debut Spectrum Suite is regarded as one of the first genuine new age albums: each section corresponds to a chakra, following the yogic idea of energy centres in the body, and the pieces unfold like gentle meditations for keyboard. He first sold his records through his own independent label, Halpern Sounds, and reached a large audience well before the new age boom gave the music a shelf in record stores. Across more than fifty albums, from Chakra Suite in the 1990s to work that brought a Grammy nomination for Best New Age Album, the aim stays the same: music as a tool for relaxation and healing rather than a performance to follow. He is recognised by the warm Rhodes tone and the patient space between notes.
