History
Steve Miller Band began in the San Francisco scene of the late 1960s as a straight blues outfit, with Miller a capable guitarist working close to Chicago electric blues. The commercial identity arrived in the following decade, when he thinned the blues down into short, bright pop-rock singles with tape delay on the guitar, wide stacked vocals and a rhythm section that never rushes. The Joker is the clearest example, a lazy shuffle carried by a slide figure and a sung catalogue of nicknames. Take the Money and Run tells a two-verse outlaw story over handclaps and an acoustic strum. Fly Like an Eagle moved the same writing into a floating synthesizer setting and became the track most often used to date the sound of mid-1970s American radio. Later hits kept the formula and added more keyboard. Listeners recognise the band by that combination of blues phrasing, echo-soaked guitar and choruses simple enough to be remembered on first hearing.
