History

Stephan Bodzin plays techno as if it were a synthesizer concerto: arpeggios that twist and climb for minutes, a lead line played live on a Moog, and builds that feel more like a film score than a DJ drop. He comes from Bremen in northern Germany and runs the Herzblut label, which released his own records. His early work, including the album Liebe ist... in 2007 and collaborations with Marc Romboy, placed him in the melodic, minimal-leaning German techno of that decade. Powers of Ten in 2015 was the breakthrough: tracks like Singularity combined driving kicks with dramatic, cinematic synth themes and became staples of large festival stages. He is above all a live performer, standing behind a wall of hardware and playing melodies by hand, which gives his sets a physical, improvised energy uncommon in techno. Listeners recognise him by the rising arpeggios, the bright analogue lead and the sense that each track is heading toward a single enormous release.
