History

Steel Panther play 1980s Sunset Strip glam metal with total technical conviction and lyrics that turn its excess into outright comedy. The Los Angeles band grew out of a long-running club act, first known as Metal Shop and then Metal Skool, that played hair metal covers and parodies on the Strip for years before releasing original music. Their characters, singer Michael Starr, guitarist Satchel, bassist Lexxi Foxx and drummer Stix Zadinia, are exaggerated portraits of the era's rock stars: teased hair, spandex, vanity and bottomless appetites. Feel the Steel in 2009 introduced songs like Death to All but Metal and Community Property, and Balls Out and All You Can Eat followed in the same spirit. The joke works because the playing is real: big gang-vocal choruses, shred solos, glossy power ballads and arena drums played as seriously as any band from 1987. Steel Panther are recognised by that contrast, a note-perfect imitation of classic glam metal carrying deliberately crude, absurd lyrics and a stage show built as much on banter as on songs.
