History
Stars of the Lid made some of the most patient music of their era: long, slowly evolving drones built from guitars, strings, brass and processed tones, stretched until single chords last for minutes and change as gradually as light in a room. The duo of Brian McBride and Adam Wiltzie formed in Austin, Texas, and released their records through the Kranky label, whose catalogue of drone and ambient music they helped define. Their approach took the texture of shoegaze guitars and the calm of classical minimalism and stripped away rhythm almost entirely, leaving only sustained sound and its slow decay. The Tired Sounds of Stars of the Lid in 2001, a sprawling multi-disc set, is widely regarded as a landmark of modern ambient, and And Their Refinement of the Decline in 2007 pushed further toward chamber orchestration, with warm cellos and horns drifting in and out. Wiltzie later co-founded A Winged Victory for the Sullen. Stars of the Lid are recognised by that sense of time slowing down, music that feels less played than exhaled.
