History
Stacey Kent, born March 27, 1965, in South Orange, New Jersey, is an American vocal jazz singer who built her career in London. After graduating from Sarah Lawrence College, she studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she met saxophonist Jim Tomlinson; they married in 1991, and he has produced and arranged her albums ever since. Kent started out singing at Café Bohème in Soho before opening for headline acts at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, releasing her debut album, Close Your Eyes, in 1997. Her sound favors intimate, understated readings of American and French songbook standards and bossa nova. A genuinely unusual thread in her career: Nobel Prize-winning novelist Kazuo Ishiguro, who picked her recording of "They Can't Take That Away from Me" on Desert Island Discs in 2002, has since co-written original song lyrics with Tomlinson for several of her albums. Kent earned a Grammy nomination for Breakfast on the Morning Tram (2009) and was made a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by France's culture ministry the same year; she has sold more than two million albums worldwide.
