History
SPK made some of the most confrontational records of early industrial music: walls of distorted electronics, metal percussion and shouted vocals, wrapped in imagery taken from medicine, psychiatry and death. The group formed in Sydney in the late 1970s, with Graeme Revell as the constant figure and Neil Hill a key early member. The initials were tied to the Sozialistisches Patientenkollektiv, a radical German patients' collective, and the band later played with other expansions of the letters. Information Overload Unit (1981) is dense and abrasive, and Leichenschrei (1982) pushed further into ritual clatter and tape noise, becoming one of the defining albums of the genre. In the mid-1980s SPK briefly moved toward danceable electronic pop, then turned again with Zamia Lehmanni (1986), a slower, more atmospheric record built on percussion and drones. Revell went on to a long career as a film composer. A listener recognises SPK by their clinical, hostile atmosphere, the metallic banging, and noise used as a deliberate assault rather than texture.
