History
Sophie Ellis-Bextor is an English singer and songwriter, born 10 April 1979 in Isleworth, London. She began her career in the late 1990s as frontwoman of the indie band theaudience, whose single "I Know Enough (I Don't Get Enough)" reached the UK top 25 before the group split in 1999. In 2000 she guested on Italian DJ Spiller's "Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)," which topped the UK singles chart and later became, by some measures, the country's biggest-selling vinyl single of the millennium. Her solo debut, "Read My Lips" (2001), reached number two on the UK Albums Chart, went double platinum, and sold roughly 1.5 million copies worldwide, driven by hits including "Murder on the Dancefloor" and a cover of Cher's "Take Me Home." Her sound blends dance-pop with disco, nu-disco and house influences across albums such as "Familia" (2016) and the Japanese-inspired "Hana" (2023). "Murder on the Dancefloor" enjoyed a striking second life in 2023 after featuring in the film "Saltburn," climbing back to number two on the UK chart more than two decades after its original release.
