History
Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee were the best-known duo of Piedmont blues, pairing Terry's whooping, breathy harmonica with McGhee's clean fingerpicked guitar and smooth, easygoing vocals. Terry came from North Carolina and McGhee from Tennessee, and both were connected to the Durham circle around Blind Boy Fuller before they moved to New York in the early 1940s. There they became part of the city's folk scene, sharing stages with Lead Belly and Woody Guthrie and playing for audiences that were discovering rural blues for the first time. Terry's style was unmistakable: he mixed harmonica phrases with falsetto hollers and imitations of trains and fox hunts, while McGhee kept a steady, swinging rhythm underneath. The folk revival of the late 1950s and 1960s made them fixtures on college campuses and festival bills in the United States and Europe, and they recorded a large catalogue for many labels, with albums like Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry Sing. A listener recognises them by the call and response between the wailing harp and the warm, relaxed guitar and voice.
