History
sombr is the project of a young New York songwriter who writes heartbreak songs with the arrangement pulled almost all the way back. The sound is guitar-led indie pop with a lot of room in it: a clean electric with reverb, a slow drum pattern that stays out of the way, and a voice that sits close to the microphone and lets breaths and cracks stay in. The subject matter is narrow on purpose, the aftermath of a relationship, the version of a person you are left with, and the writing gets its effect from plain admissions rather than metaphor. Back to Friends and Undressed both spread through short-form video before radio caught up, which is the normal route for this generation of songwriters, and they turned a bedroom-scale sound into something arenas were suddenly asking for. A listener recognises the combination of restraint and bluntness: very little happening in the track, very little held back in the lyric.
