History

Sofia Rotaru (born Sofiia Mykhailivna Rotaru, 7 August 1947) is a Ukrainian singer from Marshyntsi, Chernivtsi Oblast, born into a Romanian-speaking family. She trained at the Chernivtsi music college and studied choral conducting in Chisinau. Her breakthrough came in 1968, when she won first prize at the International Youth Song Festival in Sofia, Bulgaria — Bulgarian papers ran the headline "21-year-old Sofia has conquered Sofia." National fame followed the 1971 musical film "Chervona Ruta," built around songs by composer Volodymyr Ivasyuk, and her 1972 multilingual debut album, which established her across the Soviet Union. She went on to win First Prize at the Golden Orpheus festival in 1973, placed at Sopot in 1974 and at a Tokyo song festival in 1980, where she also became the first Soviet female singer to perform on stage in trousers. Working across pop, folk, dance and rock, her catalogue spans more than 40 albums and roughly 400 songs recorded in multiple languages, including hits like "Lavanda" and "Aist na kryshe." She holds the titles People's Artist of Ukraine and People's Artist of the Moldavian SSR, and was named Hero of Ukraine in 2002.
