History

Social Distortion started in the hardcore scene around Fullerton, California, and survived it by slowing down. Mike Ness rebuilt the band around something older than punk: rockabilly rhythm guitar, country storytelling, Chuck Berry leads played with a distorted tone and a scowl. The 1990 self-titled album is where that fusion locks into place, with Ball and Chain and Story of My Life written as plain first-person accounts of addiction, small towns and the years that get away from you. Their cover of Ring of Fire is not a novelty, it reads as an acknowledgement of where the songwriting came from. Ness sings in a worn, cracked voice that never reaches for range, and the band behind him keeps a heavy mid-tempo swing rather than the sprint the scene expected. A listener recognises the combination instantly: tattoos and pompadours, punk volume, and verses that could have been written for a jukebox thirty years earlier.
