History
The Miracles were the group Motown was built around before the label had a formula, and their records show it being worked out in public. The arrangement is small by later Motown standards, a rhythm section and close group harmony behind a light lead, with the backing voices answering the lead line rather than doubling it, which leaves space that the bigger productions of the mid-sixties later filled in. Shop Around gave the company its first major national hit and effectively proved the operation could work. The Tracks of My Tears is where the group's method is clearest: a mid-tempo song carrying a lyric about hiding grief, sung without any vocal strain at all, so the gap between what the words say and how they are delivered does the emotional work. The Tears of a Clown, a later hit, uses a bright, almost circus-like arrangement against the same kind of lyric. The billing changed to put Robinson's name in front as his role grew.
