History

Sleater-Kinney built their sound on two interlocking guitars and no bass: Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein trade riffs and counter-melodies that fill the low end between them, while Tucker's piercing vibrato and Brownstein's cooler, clipped delivery pull against each other. The band formed in Olympia, Washington, in 1994, and came out of the riot grrrl circle before growing beyond it. Janet Weiss joined on drums in 1996 and gave the band its power and precision. Call the Doctor in 1996 and Dig Me Out in 1997, the latter on Kill Rock Stars, made them one of the most admired groups in American indie rock, combining feminist punk intensity with sharp songwriting. Later records kept evolving, and The Woods in 2005, released on Sub Pop, turned heavier and noisier, with long, distorted passages that nodded to classic hard rock. The band went on hiatus in 2006, returned in 2015 with No Cities to Love and continued after Weiss left in 2019. Sleater-Kinney are recognisable by the tangled guitar conversation, the urgent drums and Tucker's voice cutting through everything.
