History
Skunk Anansie are a British rock band formed in London in spring 1994, playing their first gig at the Splash club that March. The lineup crystallized around singer Skin (Deborah Dyer), bassist Cass (Richard Keith Lewis), guitarist Ace (Martin Kent) and drummer Mark Richardson, who replaced original drummer Robbie France before the debut album's release. Their sound fused alternative rock, punk and metal with funk, dub and electronica textures, plus overtly political lyrics, aligning them with the harder-edged "Britrock" scene rather than contemporary Britpop. Debut album Paranoid & Sunburnt (1995) was followed by Stoosh (1996) and Post Orgasmic Chill (1999), yielding singles like "Weak," "Selling Jesus" and "Hedonism." In 1995 Kerrang! readers voted them Best New British Band. The group split in 2001, with Skin pursuing a solo career, then reunited in 2009, releasing further albums including Anarchytecture (2016) and The Painful Truth (2025). A 2004 Guinness Book of British Hit Singles & Albums survey ranked them among the most successful UK chart acts of 1952-2003, and they have sold roughly five million records worldwide.
