History

Skream is one of the producers who turned dubstep from a south London club variant into a genre with its own rules. He grew up around the Croydon record shop scene where the sound was being worked out in real time, and his early records still carry that room: heavy sub-bass carrying the melody, half-time drums, and long stretches where almost nothing happens except the low end moving. Midnight Request Line is the track usually named as the moment the style reached past the specialist crowd, partly because it had a figure a listener could hum, a bright synth line sitting on top of the weight instead of buried underneath it. Where much of the scene went toward aggression, his work kept a melodic and almost melancholy streak, audible on Where You Should Be and Rutten. He later moved away from dubstep tempos toward house and disco in his DJ sets, a shift that annoyed purists and surprised nobody who had noticed how song-shaped his tracks always were.
