History

Skinny Puppy built electro-industrial out of tape loops, horror-film samples, distorted drum machines and a voice run through so much processing it sounds half machine. The group formed in Vancouver in 1982 around cEvin Key and Nivek Ogre, and Dwayne Goettel later added his synth and sampling work to the core. Their records on the Canadian label Nettwerk turned dance-club rhythm into something dense and hostile. VIVIsectVI (1988) aimed that sound at animal testing and environmental damage, Too Dark Park (1990) pushed the noise and layering even further, and The Process (1996) arrived after a long, troubled recording period and after Goettel's death in 1995. Key and Ogre revived the name in the 2000s and kept releasing and touring for years. The live shows were theatre as much as concerts, with gore, masks and staged medical horror. Listeners recognise Skinny Puppy by the chopped samples, the snarling filtered vocals and a groove that stays danceable under all the static.
