History
Sinyaya Ptitsa ("Blue Bird") was a Soviet vocal-instrumental ensemble (VIA) formed in 1972 in Gomel, Byelorussian SSR, initially under the name "My, vy i gitary" before adopting its better-known title, inspired by the Soviet-American film of the same name. Its first billed concert, on 22 February 1976 in Tolyatti, is treated as the group's official birthday, and by the late 1970s it had become one of the country's most popular VIAs, with hits including "Klyon," "Ty mne ne snishsya," "Mamina plastinka," and "A nam vsyo ravno." The band toured widely through the 1980s, performing at the Bratislavská lýra festival (1979), the Moscow Olympics cultural program (1980), and, notably, for Soviet troops stationed in Afghanistan (1988) and East Germany. Among its rotating lineup of vocalists were Igor Sarukhanov and Nikolai Parfenyuk, both of whom later became well-known solo performers on Soviet and Russian television and radio.
