History
Silly Wizard were an Edinburgh folk band whose sound rested on Andy M. Stewart's warm, storytelling voice and the fast, fiery playing of brothers Johnny and Phil Cunningham on fiddle and accordion. The group began in 1970 as a trio of university students and grew into a six-piece that also featured Gordon Jones and Bob Thomas on guitar, bouzouki, mandolin and other instruments. Their records set traditional Scottish songs and dance tunes beside Stewart's own songs, written in a traditional idiom. Albums such as «Caledonia's Hardy Sons» (1978), «So Many Partings» (1979), «Wild and Beautiful» (1981), «Kiss the Tears Away» (1983) and «A Glint of Silver» (1986) show a band moving between tender ballads and breakneck sets of reels and jigs. They toured widely in Britain and Europe and built a strong following in the United States during the 1980s, and played their last show in 1988. In 2012 they entered the Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame. Listeners know them by that mix of heartfelt song and driving instrumental energy.
