History

Sidney Samson is an Amsterdam producer whose name is tied to the moment Dutch house broke into the mainstream. He started DJing as a teenager with hip hop before turning seriously to house around the end of the 1990s, and that background shows in his love of chants, stripped beats and hooks built from a single shouted phrase. 'Riverside' in 2009 was the breakthrough: a minimal, bleepy Dutch house track driven by a squelchy synth figure, a skipping groove and a crude vocal chant that crowds could shout back. It topped the charts at home and, in its 'Riverside (Let's Go!)' version, became a top ten hit in the UK. 'Shake That Ass Bitch' from the same year worked the same rough, club-tool formula. He went on to release on Spinnin' and Ultra and ran his own imprint, working through electro house and later branching into moombahton and trap. His early records are recognised by their bare arrangements, rubbery high synth riffs, Caribbean-leaning percussion and a sense of humour that treats the dancefloor as a party rather than a cathedral.
