History
SHINee were the group that made Korean pop treat the vocal line and the dance as one problem instead of two. Debuting in the late 2000s under a major Seoul label, they arrived with a contemporary-band concept and then spent a decade proving that choreography this tight could be performed by singers this capable while they were doing it. Ring Ding Dong is the early signature, a synth hook repeated to the point of obsession over a stiff, insistent beat. Lucifer put the group's footwork in front of everything else and is still used as a benchmark by trainees. View marked the later turn, a deep-house pulse and a much looser vocal arrangement that moved the group away from the hard electro of its first years. Their harmony writing, with four or five parts stacked and traded within a single chorus, became the thing other groups were measured against. They continued after losing a member in 2017, and the catalogue is still treated inside the industry as a working textbook.
