History
Shimza is a South African DJ and producer from Tembisa, on the edge of Johannesburg, and one of the leading names in Afro house and its harder cousin, Afro-tech. His productions pair driving, percussive grooves and chunky basslines with dark synth stabs and long builds, music designed for big rooms and long sets rather than radio edits. He took up music as a teenager, signed with Soulistic Music and released his debut album Shimuzic in 2015, followed by One Man Show, whose name he also gave to his own event series. Later albums Eminence in 2019 and Kimberly in 2021 showed a producer comfortable moving between vocal Afro house and stripped-back club tools. The 2020 collaboration Uwrongo, with Black Motion, Prince Kaybee and Ami Faku, became a major hit at home. He has won awards in South Africa for his DJing and built a strong following in Ibiza and on the European circuit, part of the wave that carried South African house onto international stages. Shimza's sound is recognisable by its relentless drum programming and a tension that keeps building.
