History

SEVENTEEN are built around a number: thirteen members split into a hip-hop unit, a vocal unit and a performance unit, each able to release separately and all thirteen able to move as one block. That block is the point. The choreography is written for a stage crowded enough that precision itself becomes the effect, and the group's reputation rests more on what happens live than on any single production trick. They are also unusually self-contained for a Korean idol group: members write, produce and choreograph their own material, and that in-house work gives the discography a consistency outsourced K-pop rarely has. The range runs from the brass-driven hard pop of Super to the restrained arrangement of Don't Wanna Cry, which showed early on that the vocal unit could carry a song without the full formation behind it. By the 2020s they were shifting more records in a release week than anyone else in the genre.
