History

Sergey Zakharov (1 May 1950 – February 2019) was a Soviet and Russian baritone singer born in Mykolaiv, Ukrainian SSR. After army service in Kazakhstan he moved to Moscow, enrolled at the Gnessin State Musical College, and was heard by bandleader Leonid Utyosov, who made him a soloist of his State Variety Orchestra. In 1973 Zakharov transferred to the Rimsky-Korsakov Musical College in Leningrad, where he became one of the most popular young performers in the USSR, with record pressings selling in the millions. His signature pieces included the romance "Vecherniy Zvon," the song "Yabloni v Tsvetu," and the Mister X aria from the operetta "Princess Circus." He won prizes at international contests including the Bratislava Lyre, the Sopot International Song Festival, and the Golden Orpheus, and was named People's Artist of Russia in 1996. A notable episode of his career: in the late 1970s he served a prison term, reportedly amid rivalry with singer Iosif Kobzon, then rebuilt his career, working in Odessa before returning to Leningrad's stage. He died in Moscow in February 2019.
