History

Sergey Nagovitsyn sang Russian shanson in its street form: verses about prison, debt, cheap loyalty and costlier betrayals, delivered in a slightly hoarse baritone over guitar and the thin synthesiser arrangements that provincial studios of the nineties could afford. He worked out of Perm rather than Moscow, and the recordings carry that: no polish, no attempt at a wider audience, songs written for people who would hear them from a cassette on a market stall. What kept the material alive past its genre is the writing. The characters are specific rather than generic hard men, and the sentiment stays on the near side of self-pity, which is not typical of the form. He died in 1999, still young, with a modest regional reputation. The fame arrived afterward, through radio rotation and endless compilations, and Dori-dori, Gorodskie vstrechi and Razbitaya sudba became standards that later shanson singers are expected to know.
