History
Sematary makes rap that sounds like a horror film played on a broken speaker: distorted, overblown beats built on witch house textures, samples of depressive black metal, trap and drill drums, and layered, Auto-Tuned vocals that swing between mumbling and screaming. Behind the name is Zane Steckler, from Northern California and raised in Granite Bay outside Sacramento. In 2019 he co-founded the collective and label Haunted Mound with his childhood friend Ghost Mountain, releasing the collaborative Grave House and his own debut, Rainbow Bridge, the same year. The Rainbow Bridge series grew over the following years alongside Screaming Forest, and the Butcher House mixtape arrived in 2023. His lineage is openly stated: Salem, Black Kray, Chief Keef and Yung Lean are the reference points, and he later recorded with Chief Keef himself. Haunted Mound grew into a crew of like-minded artists found largely through social media. The result feels distinctly post-internet, with deep-fried, lo-fi production, gothic imagery and a sense of menace that is both campy and genuinely unsettling.
