History
Selda Bağcan is known for a powerful, unadorned voice and for turning Turkish folk songs into protest music, singing them over bağlama and, in her 1970s recordings, over fuzzed guitars, organ and rock drums. She emerged in the early 1970s and quickly became one of the leading figures of Anatolian rock and politically engaged folk, working with the group Moğollar as backing band in 1972. Her 1976 album Selda set traditional türküs and songs about workers, poverty and injustice against psychedelic arrangements, and became the record that later carried her name far outside Turkey, especially after reissues introduced it to Western collectors and hip-hop producers who sampled it. Her political songs came at a cost: after the 1980 military coup she was imprisoned more than once and for years was not allowed to travel abroad. She kept singing and recording through those years. Listeners recognise her by the fierce, almost declamatory delivery, the bağlama at the centre of the arrangements and lyrics that speak for ordinary people.
