History

"Sekret" (Секрет, "Secret") is a Soviet/Russian rock band formed in 1983 in Leningrad by graduates of the Leningrad State Institute of Theatre, Music and Cinematography. The classic lineup crystallized within the same year: Maxim Leonidov, Nikolai Fomenko, Andrei Zabludovsky, and Alexei Murashov. The band modeled itself explicitly on The Beatles, borrowing the haircuts, suits, vocal harmonies, and melodic songwriting of the British quartet; the name itself comes from the Beatles song "Do You Want to Know a Secret?" Sekret became one of the defining acts of Soviet new wave/beat-pop, scoring hits such as "Privet" ("Hello") and "Moya lyubov na pyatom etazhe" ("My Love on the Fifth Floor"), and releasing the albums "Bit-Kvartet Sekret" (1987) and "Leningradskoye Vremya" (1989). Leonidov left in 1990 and Fomenko in 1996, effectively ending the group, though Zabludovsky and Murashov kept touring the old repertoire. The original three reunited with Fomenko in 2009, and the band remains active, releasing new material as recently as 2025.
