History

Scarlxrd makes trap metal at full volume: blown-out 808s, fast hi-hats and a voice that goes from rapping to raw, throat-shredding screams within a single bar. He comes from the West Midlands of England and arrived in rap from outside it, having fronted a rock band and built an audience as a YouTuber before reinventing himself around 2016. The song "Heart Attack" spread online in 2017 and made him one of the most visible British names in a style otherwise centred on American SoundCloud acts. What sets him apart is how much he releases and how hard it hits. He releases at a relentless pace, and records such as DXXM in 2018 and Infinity in 2019 are dense with short, explosive tracks where the hook is often a single screamed phrase repeated until it becomes a chant. His background in rock shows in the dynamics and the vocal delivery, while the beats stay rooted in trap. His signatures are the capitalised, x-for-o song titles, the stuttering ad-libs, lyrics about anger, isolation and self-belief, and the physical force of the screaming, which sits right at the front of the mix.
