History
Savage is the italo disco project of Roberto Zanetti, and it sounds like the genre at its most concentrated: a synthesiser bassline running through the whole track, drum machine claps, a melody that arrives in the first bar, and a lightly accented English vocal sung with more melancholy than the tempo suggests. Only You is the record that carried it, a mid tempo song with a descending hook that never quite resolves, and it belongs to the small group of italo tracks that outlived the fashion. Don't Cry Tonight and Goodbye work the same way, sad melodies played at dance speed. The style faded in Western Europe by the late eighties, but these songs kept circulating on tape in the Soviet Union and after it, becoming fixtures at local discos and later the basis of a durable nostalgia market. Zanetti spent much of his later career producing rather than singing. The recognisable element is the bassline: bright, sequenced and relentless.
