History
Sarah Davachi builds her music from sustained tones and the slow beating between them, letting a single chord on organ, strings or vintage synthesizer unfold until its overtones become the melody. The Calgary-born composer trained in electronic music and musicology, and her work sits between the drone tradition and the long-form minimalism of composers who treated duration as the main material. Early on she spent time with historic instruments at Calgary's National Music Centre, and analogue synthesizers, pipe organ, bowed strings and voice remain central to her palette. Let Night Come On Bells End the Day (2018) moves between Mellotron, organ and piano with a hushed, chamber-like patience, while Gave in Rest (2020) draws on early and sacred music, using strings and voice to suggest liturgy without quoting it. Her pieces rarely use rhythm; instead they change through timbre, tuning and the listener's own attention. A listener recognises her by the warmth of acoustic instruments held almost motionless and by the sense that each tone is being examined from the inside.
