History

Samuel L. Session is a Swedish techno producer and DJ known for percussive, tribal-leaning techno: dense layers of congas and toms, hypnotic loops and a driving, warm groove that sits between the Scandinavian techno sound and the hardgroove style. He emerged from the Swedish scene that produced a strong wave of loop-based techno around the turn of the millennium, and he founded his own labels SLS, Cycle and Klap Klap while also releasing on labels such as Drumcode and Soma. His best-known record, Centrafrique, released around 2000 in several parts, put African-inspired drum patterns at the centre of a techno track and became a staple of tribal techno sets. The album Nocturnal followed in 2004. A listener recognises his sound by the prominent hand-drum patterns, the rolling, rounded low end, the subtle melodic stabs and the sense of a long, trance-like journey built from percussion rather than from big synth hooks.
