History
Samotsvety ("Semiprecious Stones") is a Soviet vocal-instrumental ensemble (VIA) founded in Moscow by bandleader Yuri Malikov, first rehearsing in late 1970 and taking the "Samotsvety" name in October 1971 after a radio listener contest. The group became one of the most popular VIA acts of the 1970s, blending Soviet pop with romantic, patriotic, and folk-inflected songwriting. Its best-known hits include "Moy adres — Sovetsky Soyuz" ("My Address Is the Soviet Union"), "Uvezu tebya ya v tundru," "Vsya zhizn vperedi," and "Ne povtoryaetsya takoye nikogda." A striking episode came in 1975: at the height of the band's fame, most of its lineup broke away to form a rival group, Plamya. Malikov rebuilt Samotsvety from scratch in about three weeks, recruiting new musicians and reworking the repertoire. Over the decades several future stars passed through its ranks, including singer Vladimir Presnyakov Sr. and rock musician Alexander Barykin. The band, still led by Malikov, continues to perform, making it one of the longest-running acts to emerge from the Soviet VIA scene.
