History
Samantha Fish plays blues rock with a rough, swaggering edge: gritty slide guitar, fuzzed-out riffs, a strong, slightly smoky voice and a taste for mixing blues with soul, garage rock and roots music. She comes from Kansas City, Missouri, and learned much of her craft by sitting in at local blues jams before touring widely. Her early records came out on the German label Ruf, which also paired her with other young guitarists on the Girls with Guitars project. Chills & Fever, recorded in Detroit with a garage-rock band, dug into vintage rhythm and blues and soul covers, while Kill or Be Kind and Faster pushed her sound toward bigger, more modern rock production. She is known for playing cigar box guitars alongside standard electrics, which gives her slide work a raw, rattling tone. In 2023 she teamed up with the Texas guitarist Jesse Dayton for Death Wish Blues. A listener recognises her by the snarling slide leads, the confident vocal attack and songs that treat the blues as a living, loud rock form rather than a museum piece.
