History

Sam Hunt changed the sound of mainstream country in the mid-2010s by blending it with R&B and hip-hop rhythm: programmed beats, a half-spoken, half-sung delivery and lyrics told like late-night conversations. He comes from Cedartown, Georgia, played college football as a quarterback and turned to songwriting in Nashville, where his songs were cut by Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban and Billy Currington before his own career took off. His debut album Montevallo, named after the Alabama town where he met the woman at the centre of many of its songs, produced "Leave the Night On", "Take Your Time" and "House Party", and "Take Your Time" in particular, with its spoken verses, showed how far he was willing to stretch the format. "Body Like a Back Road" later became one of the longest-running number ones in country chart history. Southside arrived after a long gap and kept the same blend. His calling cards are the conversational phrasing, the low, intimate voice and slick drum programming under country guitars.
