History

Salt-N-Pepa turned rap records into something that worked on a dancefloor without losing the bite of a New York verse. Salt and Pepa traded lines in a bright, conversational cadence over beats built from hard drums and pop hooks, with Spinderella cutting on the turntables, and the group treated sex, men and independence as their own subject rather than an answer to somebody else's. Push It carried them out of Queens and into clubs worldwide, a track that started life on the back of a single. Let's Talk About Sex used the same pop reach to speak plainly at a moment when radio would rather not. The run through Very Necessary, with Shoop and the En Vogue collaboration Whatta Man, made them the first female rap act to sell at platinum scale, and a Grammy followed in 1995. Their sound is easy to place: two voices in call and response, a chorus built to be shouted back, and a groove closer to funk and R&B than to boom bap.
