History

Salem made the record most people point to when they explain witch house: slow, crushing Southern rap rhythms, choir-like synths, blown-out bass and vocals slowed until they sound drugged or ghostly. The trio of John Holland, Jack Donoghue and Heather Marlatt came together in 2006 in Traverse City, Michigan, and their early EPs, Yes I Smoke Crack and Water, both from 2008, circulated as a kind of rumour before the scene had a name. The chopped and screwed tempo of Houston rap sat under shoegaze haze and church-organ drones, with Donoghue's murmured rapping set against Marlatt's distant, drifting voice. King Night, released in 2010, turned that into a full album and remains the genre's central document. Their live reputation was the opposite of their records: their 2010 SXSW set drew notoriously harsh reviews. The group went quiet after 2012 and returned in 2020 as a duo of Holland and Donoghue with Fires in Heaven, a cleaner, more melodic record that still rested on that heavy, slowed-down pulse.
