History

Russian Circles make heavy music without a singer: a Chicago trio that treats guitar, bass and drums as an orchestra. Mike Sullivan builds his parts with loop pedals, layering clean arpeggios under distorted riffs so a single guitarist sounds like several, while Brian Cook's bass carries much of the low-end weight and Dave Turncrantz plays drums with a hard-hitting, almost march-like precision. The band formed in the mid-2000s and grew out of the same crossroads as Pelican and Isis, where post-rock's slow crescendos met the tonnage of sludge metal. Records such as Empros, Memorial and Blood Year show the method at full strength: long pieces that move from quiet, circling figures to crushing, doom-weighted climaxes, then pull back again. Memorial closed with a rare vocal turn from Chelsea Wolfe, a reminder of how seldom a voice appears in this music. A listener recognises them by the dynamic swing between restraint and force, the looping guitar textures, and the sense that every instrumental track is telling a story without words.
