History
Ruben Blades turned salsa into storytelling. A Panamanian singer and songwriter who came up through the New York Latin scene, he wrote lyrics closer to short fiction than to dance-floor romance: city characters, migrants, street violence, the politics of Latin America. Pedro Navaja follows a small-time hustler through a few minutes of a night that ends badly, and it became a standard across the Spanish-speaking world despite running far past radio length. Plastico attacked consumer vanity over a hard brass arrangement, which is how his records usually work, a serious text carried by a band that still makes people dance. His voice is light and conversational rather than a belter's, which suits narration. He has also worked as an actor, trained in law and served in Panamanian public life, and that second career fed the writing. What marks a Blades record is the sense that the arrangement is clearing space for words that need to be heard.
