Bass-and-drums riff rock from the 2010s: octave-split distorted bass, fuzz-pedal bass riff, cracking snare backbeat, swaggering and aggressive in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.

History

A duo out of Brighton, put together in the early 2010s: Mike Kerr sings and plays bass, Ben Thatcher plays drums, and there is no guitarist at all. The trick lives in the signal chain. Kerr splits the bass into separate octave and distortion paths and sends them to different amps, so one instrument covers the low end and what the ear reads as a fuzzed guitar riff, with nothing overdubbed onstage. The self-titled debut went to number one in the UK in 2014, and the band took Best British Group at the Brit Awards the following year. How Did We Get So Dark? (2017) also topped the UK chart. Typhoons (2021) leaned into a harder, more danceable pulse. The songs are short and riff-first, built on a repeated figure with a conspicuous hole where a second guitar would be, and Kerr's vocal sits high and dry above it. Live, the empty stage is the point.
