History

Rotten Sound play grindcore as a relentless, mid-to-high-speed pummelling: thick, crusty guitar tone, blast beats that rarely let up, hardcore-style breakdowns and the hoarse, barked vocals of Keijo Niinimaa, with lyrics aimed at politics, consumerism and social decay. The band was formed in Vaasa, Finland, in 1993 by guitarist Mika Aalto, growing out of the country's strong crust and hardcore scene rather than from mainstream metal. Through the 2000s they became one of the most dependable names in European grind, with Murderworks (2002) showing a heavier, more death metal-leaning attack and Exit (2005) and Cycles (2008) sharpening the songwriting into short, focused bursts. A stable core around Aalto and Niinimaa gave the records a consistent identity. Niinimaa's standing in the scene was such that he fronted Nasum on their 2012 farewell tour. Their signature is the dense, dirty guitars, the steady barrage of blasts and a voice that sounds like it is being torn out of the singer.
