History

ROSE sings with a thin, slightly raspy timbre that sits high and carries a recognisable catch on sustained notes, which is why she rarely disappears inside a group arrangement. She was raised in Australia, joined a Korean label as a trainee and became the main vocalist of one of the largest groups in K-pop, where her tone works as the melodic centre against the rap sections. Her solo debut kept the guitar she plays close to the surface: On the Ground is built on a rising chord progression and a shouted chorus, and Gone is closer to a singer-songwriter breakup ballad than to anything the group would release. The later solo album pushed further in that direction, pop written around chords rather than around production. APT. went the other way entirely and became the biggest thing she has done, a short loud chant of a duet with Bruno Mars borrowed from a Korean drinking game, topping charts worldwide in 2024.
