History
Ron Trent makes deep house that breathes: long tracks built on hand percussion, jazz chords and slowly unfolding pads. He grew up in Chicago and started recording as a teenager. Altered States, released on Warehouse Records in 1990, was the breakthrough, a moody synth track with a restless, almost techno edge that became a DJ favourite and was later remixed by Carl Craig. From there Trent moved toward a warmer, more spiritual sound. With the Detroit producer Chez Damier he co-founded Prescription Records in 1993, and their releases became a reference for the soulful, percussive side of deep house. He later spent years in Brooklyn, working with Anthony Nicholson among others, before returning to Chicago. Across decades of releases on labels including Peacefrog and his own Future Vision, the elements stay constant: Afro-Latin rhythms, Rhodes and guitar voicings from jazz and fusion, and a patient arrangement style. A later album, What Do the Stars Say to You on Night Time Stories, carried that approach into a more song-shaped, band-like record.
