History
Rockin' Dopsie led one of the hardest-working zydeco bands out of the Lafayette area, playing a button accordion in a style that leaned heavily on blues and rock and roll. He built his reputation in local clubs and dance halls, then reached wider audiences through European tours and records such as Doin' the Zydeco, Crowned Prince of Zydeco and Saturday Night Zydeco. His band, the Zydeco Twisters, featured saxophone and rubboard alongside the accordion, giving the music a rowdy, horn-edged push. His best-known moment outside the zydeco world came when he and his band played on Paul Simon's Graceland album, on the track "That Was Your Mother", which introduced his sound to millions of pop listeners. After Clifton Chenier's death he was among the players who claimed the title King of Zydeco, a crown that was disputed within the scene. His music is recognisable by driving shuffle rhythms, blues-rooted accordion runs, gruff vocals and a band sound built for long nights of dancing.
