History
Roby Lakatos plays the violin with the speed and fire of the Hungarian Romani tradition, then bends it toward jazz, classical showpieces and Latin tunes in the same set. He comes from the Lakatos family of Romani musicians, a line that traces itself back to the celebrated nineteenth century violinist János Bihari, and he trained at the Béla Bartók Conservatory in Budapest. For years he led his ensemble in Brussels, where his club residency built a reputation among classical players and jazz fans alike. His band keeps the old Romani lineup at its core, with cimbalom, guitar and bass, which lets him move from a slow, sobbing csárdás to a bebop run or a Monti-style virtuoso number without changing gear. Albums such as Lakatos, As Time Goes By and Fire Dance show that range, from standards to dazzling folk dances. His calling cards are the glittering ornaments, huge dynamic swings, rubato that stretches a phrase to breaking point, and a showman's sense of pacing that turns a folk melody into a concert event.
