History
Robin Thicke works in blue-eyed soul, a light falsetto and a debt to Marvin Gaye that he has never disguised. He spent years writing and producing for other singers before his own records landed, and his best work sits at the quiet end. Lost Without U is built from almost nothing, a soft acoustic guitar figure, brushed percussion and a vocal kept at conversation volume, and it found a long life on R&B radio. Sex Therapy leaned harder on contemporary production without losing the same voice. Blurred Lines changed the scale of everything, a Pharrell-produced single with a cowbell and a loping bassline that dominated the summer of 2013 and became the biggest song of the year in the United States. It also brought a lawsuit from Marvin Gaye's family over the resemblance to Got to Give It Up, and the verdict against Thicke and Pharrell became one of the most argued-over copyright decisions in modern pop.
