History
Robin Schulz turned the remix into a hit-making format, taking acoustic or folk-leaning songs and wrapping them in steady four-on-the-floor kicks, warm basslines and melodic deep house textures. The DJ and producer from Osnabrück in Germany broke out in 2014 with his remix of "Waves" by Mr. Probz, then with his version of "Prayer in C" by the French duo Lilly Wood and the Prick. That remix topped charts across Europe, including in Germany and the UK, and became one of the signature dance records of its year. His debut album Prayer followed in 2014 and collected the style. "Sugar" in 2015, built around a sample of Baby Bash's "Suga Suga" with vocals by Francesco Yates, showed he could do the same trick with R&B and pop material. In the tropical and melodic house wave of the mid-2010s he belongs with Felix Jaehn and Kygo as a producer who brought a relaxed, radio-friendly form of house into the mainstream. Listeners recognise his work by its unhurried groove, guitar or vocal hooks lifted from the original song and a clean, spacious mix.
