History

Robin S is the voice on "Show Me Love", a record whose bassline became one of the most copied sounds in dance music: a thick, stabbing organ-bass tone from the Korg M1 that bounces under a powerful soul vocal. The New York singer first cut the song around 1990, but it was the Swedish producer StoneBridge's stripped-down remix that turned it into a hit in 1993, cutting the arrangement back to that bass, a crisp beat and her voice. The contrast carried the record: a minimal, almost mechanical groove against a big, gospel-rooted performance full of ache and demand. "Luv 4 Luv" followed the same year and kept her in clubs and on radio with a similar blend of raw vocal power and lean house production. Her work belongs to the diva house moment of the early nineties, when soul singers fronted club records and producers built tracks to frame them. "Show Me Love" has since been sampled, covered and reworked many times. Listeners recognise her at once by that organ bass and a voice that sounds like it is pleading and commanding at the same time.
