History

RL Grime makes trap for large rooms: slow, heavy 808s, wide cinematic synths, pitched vocal hooks and drops that land with arena weight. He comes from Los Angeles and first worked in electro house under the name Clockwork before switching to the RL Grime project, which grew out of the WeDidIt collective. Early tracks such as "Infinite Daps" with Baauer placed him at the centre of the 2012 to 2013 trap wave, and since October 2012 his yearly Halloween mixes have become a fixture of the bass scene, a long run of edits and unreleased music with spoken cameos from unexpected guests. His debut album Void (2014) set out the dark, dramatic sound. Nova (2018) widened it with melodic singles like "I Wanna Know" and "Light Me Up" with Miguel and Julia Michaels, and Play followed in 2023. In 2019 he launched Sable Valley to release music by newer producers. His signature is patient, orchestral builds, gleaming lead synths and the contrast between near-silence and huge low end.
