History

Ringo Deathstarr are shoegaze revivalists from Texas who play the style fairly straight but are never shy about adding extra noise. Singer and songwriter Elliott Frazier started the project in 2005 in his hometown of Beaumont before moving to Austin, where a band settled around him with bassist Alex Gehring, whose softer vocals became a counterpoint to his own. The name joins the Beatles drummer and the Star Wars battle station. A self-titled EP and a run of 7-inch singles on small labels in the UK and US led to the debut album Colour Trip in 2011, released by Club AC30, and the band toured with the Smashing Pumpkins that winter. Mauve followed in 2012 and Pure Mood in 2015. Comparisons to My Bloody Valentine, the Jesus and Mary Chain, Ride and Medicine follow them everywhere, and the sound earns them: sugar-sweet melodies, tremolo-bent guitar washes, bubblegum hooks sunk in fuzz, and songs short enough to feel like pop singles heard through a wall of amplifiers.
